Northampton Town will start the new League 2 season at home to Colchester United.

The release of the 2022/23 season fixtures earlier today (23/06) confirmed that the Cobblers’ first assignment of the upcoming season sees them take on the side from Essex, who finished 15th in the 4th tier last season and who Northampton beat in both meetings.

After the opening day match-up with the U’s, Northampton’s season continues with a trip to play-off winners Grimsby Town in their first away game of the campaign.

A busy August will also feature a Carabao Cup tie, to be drawn later today, plus games against Hartlepool United, Crawley Town, Crewe Alexandra and Doncaster Rovers.

The season will continue during the World Cup in November and December, with Northampton due to play 4 games in the league during this time, as well as a potential Second Round tie in the FA Cup.

Over Christmas, Northampton will play Carlisle United in the last match before December 25th, while Boxing Day sees the Cobblers travel to play Mansfield Town in their first meeting with the side who beat the Cobblers in last season’s play-offs. The return fixture at Sixfields is due for the end of January.

Northampton’s last game of 2022 will see them play Swindon Town, and is followed by another home game on New Year’s Day when they take on Leyton Orient on New Year’s Day.

Over Easter, Northampton face a Good Friday trip to Newport County, followed by a home contest with Gillingham on Easter Monday.

The season is due to end on the weekend of Saturday May 6th 2023, and will end for Northampton with a trip north to play Tranmere Rovers at Prenton Park. The last home match will be against Bradford City the week before.

The release of the new League 2 season fixtures makes part of a busy day in the football world, with Northampton’s Papa John’s Trophy group stage and the First Round draw of the Carabao Cup also due to be revealed today.
