Northampton announce signing of defender Akin Odimayo from Swindon
Northampton have announced the club have signed defender Akin Odimayo from fellow League 2 side Swindon Town.
The 22-year-old has signed a 2 year contract with the Cobblers, with the move happening after Northampton agreed an undisclosed fee by way of compensation package with the side from Wiltshire.
Odimayo joined Swindon in 2020 from Reading after being a product of the Berkshire club’s youth ranks.
He was a regular in his two seasons at the County Ground, making 76 appearances in all competitions over his time with the Robins.
The news means Odimayo is the latest new arrival at Northampton ahead of the new campaign, following the previous captures of Lee Burge, Ryan Haynes, Danny Hylton and Ben Fox.
Odimayo’s new manager Jon Brady told the Northampton Town website that he was delighted to bring the player to Sixfields and that he targeted Odimayo as he felt his desired player profile.
He said, “Akin is a player who can play anywhere across the back.
“He has a good pedigree and he is a player who is a good age with the potential to develop and improve even further. He is comfortable playing in a back four or a five and that is important.
“He fits the profile of player we are after. He is young, hungry and ambitious and he has already played a lot of football either in League 1 or at the top end of League 2 and we are particularly pleased to welcome him to Sixfields as we know there was interest in his services elsewhere.
“He is under 24 and was offered a new deal at Swindon so we have agreed a compensation package, but he is another of our targets who we are delighted to bring to the club.”
