MK Dons have announced the signing of winger Darragh Burns, who joins the club from Irish side St Patrick’s Athletic.

The 19-year-old moves from Dublin to Milton Keynes for an undisclosed fee and has signed a contract of undisclosed length with the League One club.

Burns is the sixth new signing made by MK Dons ahead of the new season, as the club look to build on last season’s third place finish in the third tier.

The move comes midway through the League of Ireland season, with Burns having scored 4 times and registered 3 assists for St Patrick’s Athletic in the season to this point.

In all, Burns made 61 appearances for the Dublin-based side, scoring 11 times. He has also represented both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland at youth level, switching allegiances earlier this year.

MK Dons have recently had a pre-season training camp in the Republic of Ireland, with both Dons’ boss Liam Manning and Sporting Director Liam Sweeting saying the club observed Burns in person while they were on the western side of the Irish Sea. The Dons have been linked with other players also currently playing in the League of Ireland.

In his first interview with the Dons, Burns told iFollow MK Dons that he was delighted to make the move and embrace the challenge of playing in England for the first time.

He said, “It has been going on for a little while so to get it done now – I’m over the moon.

“I was excited as soon as I heard of the interest from MK Dons. I love Ireland and I’ve loved playing there but you have to challenge yourself in your career and this is a brilliant fit for me.

“The Gaffer has asked me to come in, be myself and not change anything which is what I will be looking to do. I’ll be looking to get the ball at my feet and go at defenders – and hopefully get some goals and assists to!”

Head Coach Manning added, “Darragh is a player we have watched for some time, including on our recent visit to Ireland for pre-season, and we are pleased to have been able to bring him to the Football Club.

“This will be a big transition for him, moving to a new country and a new league, so it will likely take some time to settle but he has some fantastic qualities and we are all very excited by his potential.”
